Job Description

The Government, School and Community Relations (GSCR) Manager will lead Teach for India’s advocacy and expansion initiatives with the government towards a sustainable systemic impact in the region. As a GSCR Manager, the individual will:

  • Set up operations and establish partnerships in the region by obtaining necessary permissions and MOU’s from the government.
  • Identify government and affordable private schools in Kolkata and obtain permission to set up operations by travelling to such schools and initiating discussions with key stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders such as government officials, school headmasters and teachers by ensuring continuous conversations and collaborations.
  • Stabilize operations in the initial years of being in Kolkata by ensuring strong school and government partnerships, smooth Fellowship experience, safety and support for the Fellows and children.
  • Work closely with Fellows, representatives across levels from the city and state government, other social organizations in the region as well as School and Community stakeholders, in order to create the necessary conditions for students to access an excellent education.

Responsibilities

The GSCR role is a dynamic role that gives you the opportunity to work with key stakeholders across levels to create an ecosystem of support for our children, Fellows and Staff. You will play a major role in setting up an environment to help our model thrive in the short and long term. School and Community Relations

  • Regularly visit schools and classrooms, build relationships and invest school stakeholders in the vision and mission of Teach For India, build capacity in Fellows, Staff team, Community, School and Government stakeholders as well as NGO partners to negotiate through challenges to create a conducive learning environment for our children
  • Design and execute the Fellow placements for the incoming cohort of Fellows by ensuring smooth MoU renewals with schools, creating the annual placement strategy, and exploring expansion into other government and low-income private schools in the city


Government Relations

  • Create and execute a vision for Government, Schools and Communities Relations at Teach For India [Kolkata], and drive this vision along with the Program teams in the city to multiply impact across our network of schools and create an ecosystem that enables all children to get the education and support they deserve
  • Build and sustain relationships with key stakeholders in the local government, state government, NGOs and other political and community leaders to influence policy, systems and processes that will create enabling conditions for educational and social equity
  • Lead the creation of opportunities for systemic impact in the region through internship/career opportunities in the government for our Fellows and Alumni, and special projects to work with representatives of the government, to expand impact beyond Teach For India schools and classrooms, towards all children achieving an excellent education
  • Foster champions of the movement and our impact model among government stakeholders and partners to influence impact and integrate progressive strategy into the current ecosystem
  • Design, promote and execute spaces/projects for collective action beyond Teach For India schools towards excellent education for all children, between key stakeholders in the educational landscape


Additional Responsibilities

  • Support in planning and organizing city events like summits, mid-year retreats and more, to nurture a sense of community in our Fellows and stakeholders
  • Support in selection of beneficiaries, Matriculation, based on interest and skills, to infuse the most promising talent into the Fellowship
  • Lead and support the City Child Protection Committee, to focus on child safety and wellbeing for all students in the city


Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • Working knowledge of the local language – Bengali (Read, Write and Speak)
  • Minimum 3 years work experience managing teams and projects to excellent outcomes at scale.
  • Strong sense of possibility with what is possible for low-income communities.
  • Strong competence in negotiating with a diverse set of stakeholders towards Teach For India’s vision and desired outcomes.
  • Strong BRIO [Building Relationships and Influencing Others] and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills to work through unstructured environments.
  • Ability to manage self, team and time amidst multiple priorities.


Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • Familiarity and/or experience working with government systems.
  • Experience in managing public-private partnerships.
